Inala's home page

Inala of Huon is a 35' sloop built by Athol Walters in Port Huon, Tasmania. 'Inala' means 'waters' in the local language.

Huon pine is much prized for boat building because it is light, strong and contains an oil that resists rot and the torado worm. Unfortunately, the tree grows extremely slowly (a huon pine in Tasmania is thought to be the world's oldest tree). When the hydroelectric authority were flooding Tasmanian valleys, the 'piners' (timbergetters) would go in and cut the huon pine. A generation of boats were built from the wood thus obtained.
