For our scientific work, see Publications,
where many of our papers may be downloaded in pdf format.
For general references, our favourite books on Music
Acoustics are
The Physics of Musical Instruments, N.H. Fletcher
and T.D. Rossing, (Springer-Verlag, New York, NY, 1998), which is rather technical, and
Euphonics. The Science of Musical Instruments. Jim Woodhouse. euphonics.org. (The main level is non-mathematical, but it regular links to technical material.)
The Science of Musical Sounds, J. Sundberg,
(Academic, San Diego, 1989).
The Science of Sound, T.D. Rossing, (Addison-Wesley,
Reading, Mass, 1982).
Non-technical references
Rossing's book (above) is designed for readers who have
no training in physics or maths and so it includes easy-to-follow
appendices on some relevant areas of mathematics and physics.
We are often asked if there are books that are suitable
for musicians who really want to avoid technical language
and equations completely. For this purpose, we recommend the introductory level of Jim Woodhouse's Euphonics site, linked above, or Howard Pollard's books, in which equations never
appear:
