Tables

Tables are typically used either for presentation of data in tabular form or for layout purposes.

  1. Tables for presentation of data
It is a proven fact that if information is presented in a highly formatted manner making use of bullet points, tables etc it is more likely to be read. The use of tables to make the data more easily interpreted is particularly useful in certain circumstances
e.g. Calendar of Events Timetables Images etc. Parameters that can be selected include colour, background image, border thickness etc.
  2. Tables for Layout
Often the border is not showing and tables are used for layout purposes. The current site is a good example. The page is designed within a table of width 600 pixels that is centre aligned. The advantage of this design is that the length of textual content is kept to a minimum which makes for easy reading. Also 600 pixels width means that the page will display even in small monitors with no need for resizing. The menu on the left is a series of images placed inside a table containing many rows. Download the current site from you Netscape browser without saving the images and view in a HTML editor to see the extent to which tables have been used.

The present site uses tables extensively for placement of images and text and to limit the width of the site to 600 pixels. See image below:
